Institute for Human Rights and Business Podcast: What has the Rana Plaza disaster taught us?
This week marked 10 years since the tragic Rana Plaza factory collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 24 April 2013. Sanchita Banerjee Saxena and Salil Tripathi discuss the findings of their report about the inadequate progress made since then, which has not fully enabled the protection of garment workers. Salil also interviews Nazma Akter, who raises the gender discrimination and exploitation experienced by female garment workers, and the water pollution from the clothing industry. Rizwana Hassan is also interviewed, who discusses the impacts experienced in other sectors, including agricultural challenges and river pollution from tanneries. Rizwana also highlights the lack of value of the ecosystem, due to the pursuit of development.
The podcast and report can be accessed on the Institute for Human Rights and Business website.
