Let’s Talk Ecosystems Podcast

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have launched a podcast series this week, highlighting the work of young people that are involved in positive environmental projects. This forms part of the initiatives for the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).

I enjoyed listening to the first episode with sustainable cacao farmer Louise Mabulo, as it covered the themes of biodiversity conservation, farming livelihoods and landscape stewardship. Louise also shares ideas about how people can begin their own initiatives, the significance of storytelling in food sustainability and how indigenous and traditional knowledge is used in farming. You can access the podcast here.

Taking Sides: a memoir about love, war and changing the world by Sherine Tadros

I attended a talk by Sherine Tadros on her new book, Taking Sides: a memoir about love, war and changing the world, and was inspired by her experiences and journey towards human rights activism, from a career that began in journalism. The book is a thoughtful and powerful reflection of Sherine’s journey, providing a glimpse into the fast-paced, dangerous world of war and conflict reporting. Sherine also delves into the impact of conflict on families, with deeply personal and moving accounts of not only herself and her family, but a reminder also of the people forgotten once the news-cycle moves on. We are also given an insight into the lobbying and resolution process at the United Nations through Sherine’s work at Amnesty International. I thought of this when the UN General Assembly approved the request for the advisory opinion of the ICJ. Amongst the countries recorded as supporting the resolution, one country is also listed whose advisors Sherine refers to as being instrumental in certain resolution efforts, and I imagine they may have also played a unique role in the advisory opinion campaign. You will need to read this incredible book to find out more.
