AFSA publication- Stories of Change: Agroecology as a Climate Adaptation Approach
The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (“AFSA”) has published a new book documenting how community-led agroecology is being used as a climate adaptation measure in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The achievements of these projects include the maintenance of food security through self-produced food, the creation of biolocal seeds, and the development of forest gardens. Recommendations are made for increased policy support and funding to assist with the promotion of these initiatives.
The book can be downloaded from AFSA’s website here.
IDS Report- Pathways to Equitable Food Systems
A new report by the Institute of Development Studies (“IDS”) considers studies from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America to identify pathways through which inequity in food systems can be addressed. The report considers how hunger, diets and nutrition, livelihoods and territories are linked to inequitable food systems, and proposes 4 ways to address this. These pathways involve community and government actions, the avoidance of single solutions by targeting multiple initiatives, challenging programmes that do not benefit intended groups but instead create further inequities, and creating opportunities for marginalised groups to participate and contribute towards policymaking. The report also recognises the role of agroecology in advancing social justice together with environmental protection to create resilience in agriculture.
